The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF, Mission Bay Campus is seeking a Specialist for full-time work to perform and manage research activities in computational chemistry and drug design. The position is in the laboratory of Dr. Stanley Prusiner and will support research efforts using analytical chemistry and structure-based drug design methods to assist in the research and development of inhibitors of neurodegenerative disease pathways. Highly motivated candidates capable of independent problem solving and teamwork are encouraged to apply. This position will be part of a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities in the Sandler Neurosciences Building on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. A successful candidate will be hired as a Specialist with rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Duties Include:
Apply computational modeling approaches for the purposes of drug design.
Assist in using structure-based methods including ligand docking, pharmacophore, and ligand design methods.
Computational modeling using Python, Matlab and other programing methods.
Communication with IND and UCSF investigators, students and postdocs in coordinating 3D structural analysis and computational modeling projects.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. and 5+ years Post-Doctoral work in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry or related field
3-4 years-experience in computational chemistry and programming.

Desired Qualifications
Experience in computational chemistry and atomic modeling with protein macromolecules.
Experience in teaching, writing or other communication in the field of chemistry.
Experience in computer programming languages including the ability to write and debug programs in Python, Matlab, etc.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
